World of Solitaire: what’s in the name?

If there is one game whose name has changed a lot in the last 200 years, it is that of the game Solitary Patience.

Traditionally, the types of games that today are called Solitaire are referred to by the term Games of Patience. In order to write the content for this website I ordered myself a lot of books and started a research to the history and background of Solitaire.

Patience Meaning, the background of Patience

The name Patience is from origin a French name although the game origin seems to be different. The most historical game books mentioning “games of Patience” or “Grand Patiences” are originated from Europe. It’s unclear where the game exactly came from, but we can tell that the popularity of the game started in European countries like Sweden, Germany after which the popularity spread, as it were, all over Europe and later the whole world.

The oldest references to a Patience game (patiencespiel) is in a German book from 1798. Here the word Patience is referring to a card game for 2 players. Also in later writings, Patience games refer to 2 player card games.

Solitaire: A “Solitary” Game of Patience

There is a theory that Patience was originally devised as a 2 player card game played with 2 decks of cards. before the start of a game players played it “Solitary” to practise the game.

The funny thing is that during my research I found out that already around the late 1890ties when the game became very popular in the United States, there was a lot of discussion about the name. The original name was Patience, a game of Patience. But due to the fact that the game at that time, mainly was played as a single player’s card game, more people started lobbying to call the name Solitaire or Solitary.

Nowadays there are only a few countries left where they name the game Patience. In the Netherlands, Belgium and some French speaking countries the name Patience is still used and in countries around them the local word is often still very related to Patience.

The Unbeatable Popularity of Card Games for 1 person

Card games for one person were always very popular and they will most likely always be. The game is interesting for young and old, especially when you want to relax or kill your time. The biggest advantages of playing solitaire are related to training your brain. Therefor the game is ideal to play when you are retired, or you are getting older. There is no pressure or reaction speed involved. It’s a very relaxing game what you can play as soon you have a couple of minutes free. A single game doesn’t take long and is experienced as very satisfying.
